Gynecomastia is often caused
by hormonal imbalances

Are you a man with one or both breasts that are abnormally large? Gynecomastia is the medical name for the condition that’s characterized by enlarged male breast tissue. While it’s usually not a life-threatening issue, gynecomastia can be a source of stress, embarrassment and anxiety.

Gynecomastia is often caused by hormonal imbalances involving the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for breast tissue growth. While the male body produces both hormones, testosterone is usually in higher amounts. When the body produces too much estrogen, it causes changes in the body, causing a man’s breasts to grow.

Enlarged male breast tissue can also be caused by obesity, which can lead to breast tissue growth. It may also be a side effect of certain medicines such as antidepressants, antibiotics, prostate cancer treatments etc.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a male breast reduction surgery that involves the removal of glandular tissue and excess fat from the chest to make it flatter, firmer and more traditionally masculine. It can also be performed in conjunction with other plastic procedures like pectoral implants for a defined, chest contour.

Because gynecomastia is a problem relating to tissue growth rather than fat, it cannot be properly addressed by exercising or losing weight. Treating this condition requires male breast reduction surgery.

How does it work?

After a consultation with the surgeon and a physical examination has been carried out, you will be cleared for surgery. The procedure involves the surgeon making an incision around the nipple and removing excess fatty tissue. This may be done with either a surgical knife or via liposuction to suck out the fatty tissue. Sometimes, both techniques are employed.

Once the ideal chest size and shape are achieved, the nipples will be repositioned and the cut will be covered with stitches. The procedure takes about 1.5 hours and can be completed with general anaesthesia or a local anaesthetic that’s used in conjunction with sedation.

Who is it for?

You may be a candidate for male breast reduction surgery if you have unusually larger breasts that make you feel uncomfortable.
